Shirley Temple, one of the most popular actors in the world, died last night at her California home at the age of 85.
Temple's work as a young girl in the 1930s and 1940s could be seen in dozens of films, starring alongside Clark Gable, Bing Crosby and more of the greats. She decided to retire at 22. The American Film Institute ranks her as one of the 50 greatest screen legends of all time.
Even though she was a child star, Temple managed to live a very normal life - she had three children, worked as a Republical fundraiser and a U.S. Ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia. A breast cancer survivor, she was also commended for raising breast cancer awareness.
