Fire Lieutenant Gordon Ambelas is being remembered as a hero, after he died in a Brooklyn apartment fire over the weekend.

The 40 year old Ambelas was a 14 year veteran of the FDNY and was known to friends as “Matt.”

"He died a hero.  That's how he lived," said firefighter Eric Bischoff.

On Saturday night he responded to the Independence Houses on Wilson Street after a call about a fire on the 19th floor.  Ambelas went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at Woodhull Hospital.

"Lieutenant Ambelas died doing what fire officers do, leading firefighters in search of life," said Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro.

Officials said the fire was caused by an air conditioner cord that was pinched between a bed frame and the wall.
