"Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812" is currently leading the pack with 12 nominations for the 2017 Tony Awards! The offbeat pop opera based on a slice of Tolstoy's "War and Peace" earned more nominations than any other show, capping a remarkable journey from starting out in a small off-Broadway theater, to being New York's most popular show. Recording artist Josh Groban, who made his acclaimed Broadway debut in this show, was among the nominations. Anyone remember their spectacular performance at last year's Broadway In Bryant Park?!
"Dear Evan Hansen" is also in the lead for the most coveted prize at the Tony's, 'Best New Musical' with nine nominations. The play is about an anxiety-ridden adolescent who insinuates himself into the life of a grieving family. Both deeply personal and profoundly contemporary, "Dear Evan Hansen" is wildly popular due to it's overall performance, outstanding cast, and great message behind the plot.
The old-fashioned, crowd-pleasing revival of "Hello Dolly" scored 10 nominations, including for it's stars Bette Midler and David Hyde Pierce. The show is so popular that it reached its highest weekly gross yet while just in the first full week of performances. This revival is the first new production of the classical music to appear on Broadway since it opened more than fifty years ago, and pays tribute to the original directing and choreography.
"Come From Away", is based off of a true story about 7,000 stranded passengers and the small town in Newfoundland that put their lives on hold and opened their homes to strangers after New York's 9/11 attacks. The play is nominated for Best New Musical amongst other awards.
Tune in to Tony Awards to see who wins on Sunday, June 11th at 8pm hosted by Kevin Spacey!
