More People Moving From New Jersey Than Any U.S. State, Study Says

The 'most moved from' state in the union is New Jersey, but Connecticut and New York are also in the top four, according to a new study which is shining a light on an apparent exodus from the Tri-State area.

More people moved out of New Jersey than any other state in 2018. The Garden State was followed by Illinois, Connecticut and New York, respectively, says United Van Lines' National Movers Study in a new report

"The northeast region continues to see more residents leaving than moving in, with 57 percent of all moves within the northeast U.S. being outbound moves," the company said in a release.

It continued, adding that more than two-thirds of New Jersey moves (66.8 percent) were moves in which residents were leaving the state. The company says 62 percent of Connecticut moves and 61.5 percent of New York moves were outbound in 2018.

The moves appear to be motivated by factors like "job growth, lower costs of living, state budgetary challenges and more temperate climates," said University of California, Los Angeles professor Michael Stoll in a statement.

The only state in the northeast, considered to include all the states in New England, plus New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, that ranked on the "most moved to" list was Vermont.

The study found that 72.6 percent of Vermont moves were inbound.

With the exception of Vermont, Washington D.C. and the Carolinas, all the "most moved to" states are west of the Mississippi, including Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, Washington and South Dakota.
