NY Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis Declares Win Over Incumbent Max Rose

New York City's only swing district appears to have swung red as republican state Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis declared victory over incumbent democrat Max Rose late-Tuesday.

Malliotakis, who's campaign was supported by President Trump, won 58 percent of the vote, compared to Rose's 42 percent with over 98 percent of precincts reporting in New York's 11th District.

Rose, a 33-year-old veteran and captain in the National Guard, and Malliotakis both made overtures to the NYPD for support, heavily criticizing NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio during their respective campaigns.

"This race was about the brave men and women of the NYPD and all our law enforcement and first responders," Malliotakis said in remarks thanking the police unions for their early support. "This is one elected official who will always have their back."

The 11th District, which includes all of Staten Island, leaned heavily towards President Trump as well in Tuesday's election.

Rose refused to concede the race Tuesday night, saying that he would only do so once absentee and mail-in ballots were counted.

Addressing criticism over his support of both Black Lives Matter demonstrators and law enforcement, Rose argued that both black families and police have "legitimate fears" about violent encounters and that people shouldn't have to choose to empathize with one side or the other.
