Hassenfeld Children's Hospital Commits To Treating Patients Holistically

Daphne Gilles’ daughter Mia was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was just two years old. Now at age 14, Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital continues to make a difference in the teen’s everyday life.

Being diagnosed with a chronic condition is something that follows you around your entire life. It was important for Mia to connect with a place, like Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital, that could treat her holistically, taking into account the mental and social factors, as well as the symptoms of the disease.

Through the hospital, Mia is able to talk with others about how she emotional manages her disease. Daphne tells Cubby and Christine, “Part of Hassenfeld Children's Hospital is the NYU Pediatric Diabetes Center where Mia is connected and they are so committed to treating the whole person that i'm kind of blown away. I was thinking the other day about how really grateful I am that there's this space that she can enter where they're thinking about all aspects of her identity. They're always thinking about how is she doing psychologically and how she is viewing herself (self image).”

Gilles urges you to support Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital in any way you can because the hospital has been a rock of support for her family and many other families in the community. Donate here to our Hope for the Holidays radiothon here.
