After more than 20 years together, Prince William and Kate Middleton have experienced many birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions and so they likely know exactly the perfect gift to surprise each other with. However, that wasn't always the case. The Prince of Wales recently revealed the unexpected gift he once gave Middleton at the start of their relationship that "didn't go well."

"I did get my wife a pair of binoculars once," he said in a recent radio interview, per the Mirror. He added that the gift made a lasting impression and that the Princess of Wales has "never let me forget that."

Even he admits he's not sure why that was the gift he chose, but he must have had a good reason for the purchase as he joked that the strange present helped him "seal the deal" with his now-wife.

"That was early on in the courtship that was — I think that sealed the deal," he said. "It didn't go well. Honestly, I have no idea why I bought her a pair of binoculars, it seemed like a good idea at the time."

Willam and Middleton met in 2001 when they were both students at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and went on to get married at Westminster Abbey in London in April 2011, per Page Six. Since tying the knot, they have welcomed three children together: Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6.
