Netflix to Adapt 'American Son' Into Film

Netflix is set to adapt a film version of Broadway's American Son.

Kerry Washington, currently starring on Broadway as Kendra, announced the news on Monday night on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Washington is set to reprise her role in the Netflix production alongside her cast-mates Steven Pasquale, Jeremy Jordan, and Eugene Lee with Tony Award-winner Kenny Leon returning to direct and produce.

Christopher Demos-Brown's Broadway play American Son follows the story of a separated interracial couple reuniting in search for their missing teenage son. The play explores themes of family, love, and identity. “’American Son' powerfully explores themes of family, love and identity,” Cindy Holland, vice president of original content at Netflix, said in the press release. “We are honored to work with Kerry Washington, Kenny Leon, Christopher Demos-Brown and the entire cast to bring this story from the Broadway stage to our members around the world.”

American Son will be on the Broadway stage until January 27, with production is set to begin on the film in New York City in February.
