MetroCards To Be Replaced This Spring

It's official! MetroCards are retiring from the subway system beginning in May 2019.

In October of 2017, the MTA announced their plan to do away with the little yellow swipe cards that have been in use since the 1990s. Starting in May, subway riders will be able to tap their phone, smart card, or even a debit card to ride the subway. The new smart card is aiming to come to the underground scene in 2021.

According to Secret NYC, public transport riders in Staten Island passing through the Lexington Avenue Line from Grand Central–42nd Street to Atlantic Avenue–Barclays Center on the 4, 5 or 6 trains will have the option to use the new payment method beginning in May 2019.

Goodbye, to our friend the MetroCard! Will you miss it?
