Gambler Wins Insane Amount Of Money Betting On Archie As Royal Baby Name

One lucky gambler won an insane amount of money after Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced they named their newborn son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. The British woman, who has remained anonymous, took home the equivalent of $23,400 after betting on Archie as the royal baby's name.

After Archie's arrival on Monday (May 6), the woman decided to put £120 (about $156) down on the unexpected moniker because her grandson, also named Archie, was celebrating his birthday, as well. She plans to save the winnings for her grandson.

"The reason I went for Archie was because my grandson, who is born on the same day as the prince, is named Archie," she explained. "So I thought I'd go for a cheeky bet as perhaps my Archie would bring some luck." And he certainly did.

Professional oddsmakers Ladbrokes and Coral both reported that only a handful of gamblers placed bets on the name Archie. Before the royal baby's birth, the names with the highest odds were Spencer, James, and Alexander. "This has to go down as one of the biggest surprises in royal betting history, as it was a 100/1 outsider before the name was revealed," a spokesperson from Coral told the Daily Mail.

Professional oddsmakers correctly predicted Prince William and Kate Middleton would name their second child Charlotte back in 2015. For many royal-watchers, the name was a surprising choice because Princess Charlotte is fourth in line for throne and she was not given an ancestral family name. Despite that, though, Charlotte was the odds-on favorite name in the days before the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge announced their choice.

Congratulations again to Meghan and Harry on their little bundle of joy...and to the grandmother who made a good call on picking Archie as the royal baby name!
