How Hassenfeld Children's Hospital Saved Child With Diabetes Diagnosis

Helen Little spoke with Heather and Ellis Berman during our 6th annual Hope For The Holidays Radiothon about their experience at Hassenfeld.

Heather noticed her 17-month old son, Ellis, was asking for water more and more… She took him to his pediatrician and she was told not to worry. Days later, she rushed him to their local Emergency Room. At Hassenfeld Children's Hospital, Ellis was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and their life changed forever.

"If you ask people, other parents or people who have been diagnosed with type one diabetes, it's very similar story - It's the asking for water. It's 'I'm thirsty', it's having to go to the bathroom. I took him to his his pediatrician who kind of dismissed it.... The day that he was diagnosed, I took him in and it was terrifying. A normal blood sugar is about 80 to 120 is the normal range. His was at 2000. But I look at that day, what we call it in the type one world, we call this a di-versity, but I don't call it that. I call it the day that I saved his life. The Hassenfeld team has given me so much. And what I think about now is the people, the parents of the children who were just diagnosed, and they need the level of care that that we that we've gotten."
